Portable SSD: simplest option
A sealed portable SSD is convenient, compact and usually well supported. It is the easiest recommendation when you do not already own an NVMe drive.
NVMe enclosure: more flexible
An enclosure lets you choose and replace the drive. It is especially attractive if you already have a spare SSD.
Do not pay for speed the connection cannot deliver
A very fast NVMe drive inside a 10 Gbps USB enclosure will be limited by the enclosure and USB link. Match the parts instead of maximizing one specification.
